Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual or perennial herbs, rarely woody subshrubs or shrubs, often strongly scented.

Stems: Usually mealy pubescent or glandular pubescent, sometimes glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades linear to hastate or lanceolate to ovate. Margins entire to toothed or lobed. Usually petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in bractless, axillary or terminal spikes or in clusters. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or rarely unisexual, small. Calyx (3–)5-lobed, persistent, flat or keeled. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 1–5, opposite the calyx lobes or adnate to their bases; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2–3(–5)-carpellate, 1-celled; ovule 1, placentation basal; styles 2–5; stigmas dry.

Fruit: Utricles. Seeds 1 per fruit; horizontal or vertical.
